A 72-year-old man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after an altercation at the Pie-IX Metro station in Montreal's Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.

Police say the fight broke out around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, beginning on a train before spilling onto the platform.

The victim was struck several times in the upper body and was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The suspect fled the scene and has not been arrested.
