The 89th Academy Awards take place this Sunday in Los Angeles and Arrival has 8 nominations. The sci-fi thriller is directed by Quebec native Denis Villeneuve and was filmed in Montreal. Arrival is nominated for the following Oscars: 

• Best Picture
• Best Director (Denis Villeneuve) 
• Best Cinematography
• Best Film Editing
• Best Sound Editing
• Best Sound Mixing
• Best Production Design
• Best Writing Adapted Screenplay

This is Villeneuve's first nod for Best Director after directing the critically acclaimed Sicario and Prisoners. Villeneuve is also directing Blade Runner 2049, which is slated for release later in 2017.
